Linn County

Linn County sits mid-way through Oregon’s Willamette Valley, bordered by the gentle curves of the Willamette River on the west and north, the ridge of the Cascade Mountain Range on the east, and open farmland to the south. It’s more than 2,000 square miles full of scenic countryside and friendly small towns. When you’re in Albany, exploring the rest of the county is must-do.

History

Far before settlers from the eastern U.S. began crossing the plains in the 1840s, Linn County was home to bands of the Kalapuya people. Today, their descendants have joined with other tribes to form the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde. Displays telling the story of Linn County’s Native American history can be found at the Linn County Museum in Brownsville.

Settlers began arriving in Linn County in the early 1840s. Today visitors can explore an original hand-hewn log cabin dating from 1846 when they visit Kirk’s Ferry in Brownsville, see an authentically restored pioneer-era house when they visit the Monteith House in Albany, and a covered wagon that actually crossed the plains at the Linn County Museum.
