Discover Linn County, Oregon: Where History Meets Adventure

Nestled in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Linn County is a place where history, natural beauty, and small-town charm come together. Bordered by the scenic Willamette River to the west, the towering Cascade Mountains to the east, and rolling farmlands to the south, Linn County offers a rich tapestry of experiences for visitors. Whether you're drawn to its pioneer past, breathtaking landscapes, or vibrant community events, there’s something here for everyone.

Long before settlers arrived in the 1840s, the land that is now Linn County was home to the Kalapuya people. The Kalapuya lived in seasonal villages, moving throughout the Willamette Valley to fish, hunt, and gather food. Their rich culture and traditions were deeply connected to the land, and they practiced controlled burning to maintain open prairies and encourage the growth of important food sources like camas root.

Today, the Kalapuya are part of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. Some of their stories, artifacts, and history are preserved at the Linn County Historical Museum in Brownsville, where visitors can learn more about their legacy and contributions to the region.

As settlers arrived via the Oregon Trail in the early 1840s, small communities began to take root. Albany, founded in 1848, quickly grew into a bustling trade center. History enthusiasts can explore significant sites like the Monteith House, an authentically restored pioneer-era home, or visit Kirk’s Ferry in Brownsville, home to an original 1846 hand-hewn log cabin. At the Linn County Historical Museum, visitors can even see a covered wagon that once made the treacherous journey across the plains. Find out more at the Albany Regional Museum where you can explore exhibits filled with a vibrant history of colorful characters, booming industry, and explosive events.
