Fishing
Whether you're a seasoned angler chasing steelhead or simply looking to relax with a rod and reel by the water, the Albany area offers a wealth of fishing opportunities in the heart of the Willamette Valley.
Diverse Fishing Waters
Local rivers, lakes, and ponds provide year-round fishing for a variety of species. The Willamette and Santiam Rivers are known for seasonal runs of Chinook salmon and steelhead. These rivers also offer opportunities for bass and trout fishing. Cold streams in east Linn County attract fly fishers, with rainbow, cutthroat, and brook trout common in the area.
For warmwater species like bass, catfish, and bluegill, visit local lakes and reservoirs. Foster Reservoir and Green Peter Reservoir, east of Sweet Home, are popular destinations offering trout, kokanee, and warmwater fish. Each features boat launches, picnic areas, and ample shoreline access.
Family-Friendly Fishing Spots
Several easily accessible locations are regularly stocked by the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW), making them ideal for families and beginner anglers:
Waverly Lake – Located in a city park off Pacific Boulevard SE in Albany.
Timber-Linn Lake – Located within Timber-Linn Memorial Park near the Linn County Expo Center.
Freeway Lakes – A peaceful series of connected lakes southeast of Albany.
These sites are stocked each spring with legal-sized rainbow trout, and sometimes large broodstock trout.
E.E. Wilson Pond, northwest of Albany near Adair Village, is another spring-stocked location well-suited for youth and new anglers. The pond includes an ADA-accessible fishing platform.
Fly Fishing Resources
Fly fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the many opportunities in the region’s rivers and cold-water streams. For gear, guidance, and local expertise, stop by Two Rivers Fly Shop in historic downtown Albany at 204 Second Avenue SW. The knowledgeable staff are ready to assist with gear selection, fly recommendations, and trip ideas.
Licensing and Regulations
A valid Oregon fishing license is required for anyone age 12 or older. Licenses and tags are available at most local sporting goods stores or online at MyODFW.com. The Trout Stocking Schedule provides current information on where and when fish are being planted.
Free Fishing Days
Each year, ODFW designates several Free Fishing Days, during which no license or tag is required to fish, crab, or clam anywhere in Oregon. These weekends are a great time to introduce someone new to the sport. Look for articles section of the ODFW website for this year's dates.
