The restored steeple will be placed on the Cumberland Building with the help of a crane on Wednesday, April 26 at 8 am. For safety, you will need to stay behind the barriers. Before then, you can view the steeple from a closer vantage point and check out the historically accurate paint colors chosen for the restored steeple. To view the steeple now or on the day of the move, the best place from which to see is on the west side of the building from Santiam Rd SE or from the Habitat for Humanity Restore parking lot. Please do not park in the Restore parking lot during their business hours from 9 am-5pm. This has been a long project to restore the Cumberland. Come be a part of this amazing Albany restoration project.
History of the Cumberland
The Cumberland Church building has been a part of Albany for 130 years. The church was built in 1892 by the Cumberland Presbyterians, a progressive branch of the Presbyterian Church. When it was dedicated on May 5, 1892, it was a rectangular, one room meeting-style church. The building was moved to its new home on the corner of Santiam and Pine on October 17, 2021. The new address is 1400 Santiam Road SE. Once restoration is complete, the Cumberland would offer educational and enrichment programs for children and families, provide a facility for the arts, education, recreation, celebration and locally-based activities, and invite groups, both public and private, to rent the building for events.
