The public is invited to the grand opening of the new Albany Fire Station 11, 611 Lyon Street SE, at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 6, 2017.
Visitors are asked to gather in the parking lot on the south side of the building, near Hasty Freez, for the formal grand-opening ceremonies. The station will be open to the public for tours until 6:00 p.m.
The new fire station is a 24,300 square-foot two-story structure with drive-through apparatus bays. It replaces a smaller two-story structure, built in 1949, which was not built to modern seismic standards and did not provide access for persons with physical limitations. The new station has been built to withstand earthquakes. Albany voters approved the $7.5 million project, part of an $18.5 million bond measure, in May 2015.
Station 11 will also be open for tours on Saturday, October 7, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as part of the Fire Department’s annual Treasure Hunt event. Treasure Hunt activities are also scheduled that day at Station 14 in North Albany at 2850 NW Gibson Hill Road.
The May 2015 bond measure is also paying for construction of a new police station at 2600 Pacific Boulevard SW. A grand opening for that building will be scheduled later this fall.
Mackenzie, a Portland-based architecture and engineering firm, designed both new buildings. Gerding Builders, Corvallis, is the general contractor for both.
