Responsible Reopening

Businesses have started to reopen in Albany and around Oregon, but leisure travel remains discouraged for now. Stay safe by staying local.

Logo for Responsible ReopeningWhat can you expect when you do decide to go shopping? Some people are hesitant to get out and about in light of restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But a few Albany-area businesses are hoping their participation in a new program will help take some of that trepidation away.

We’re proud to join our industry partners in committing to a safer Willamette Valley by taking part in the all-new Responsible Reopening program, sponsored by the Willamette Valley Visitors Association. In order to elevate a valley-wide message of unity, care and excellence we hope others will join our fellow businesses and pledge to implement these self-regulated Willamette Valley Community Commitments, in addition to mandated state requirements, for the health and safety of locals and visitors alike.

To sign up go to WillametteValley.org. For more information, call the Albany Visitors Association at 541-928-0911, or email our office.

So far, more than a dozen area businesses and organizations are participating and have pledged to enact a 10-point safety checklist designed to create the safest possible environment.

How will you know? Participating businesses are displaying decals and other signage bearing the Responsible Reopening logo to feature those safety standards (as seen here with this blog). As an example, upon entering Sybaris Bistro you notice the spacious layout has changed to offer patrons the safest dining experience possible while keeping the same quality service and atmosphere Sybaris fans have come to enjoy. The restaurant also offers limited seating outside.

To date, here are Albany-area businesses taking part in the program who are making sure their patrons and staff are safe: Springhill Cellars WineryUrban Ag SupplyComfort Suites AlbanyAlbany Visitors Association, St. Innocent Winery in Jefferson, Phoenix InnSybarisCalapooia Brewing CompanyDeluxe Brewing & Sinister Distilling, Frankie’sPhoenix Inn Suites, Bryant Family Farm, Gallery Calapooia, Iron Water Ranch and Albany Historic Carousel & Museum.

So, when you get the urge to shop or get a meal out, take time to look for the Reopen Responsibly signs in and around Albany.

23 amazing things to do in April

Photo of tulips blooming in a field and horses in the distance, by photographer Stephanie Lowe

Do April showers really bring spring flowers? If you visit anywhere in the Willamette Valley, they certainly do! And not only do fragrant bouquets color our springtime, but there’s plenty of other fresh things to see and do in Albany and Linn County.

We’ve listed some of the more notable events and places to visit below.

Image of fiber artist Karen Miller's work that features a full moon over tree silhouettes entitled "Moonset."April 5th First Friday in Downtown Albany Make sure to pop downtown after work and experience the fun. Many restaurants, shops, galleries and attractions host extended hours and specials during the evening. Here’s a few we think you might enjoy:

  • First Friday at the Albany Regional Museum Two local artists will exhibit their work—let Linda D. Ellsworth’s oils and acrylics and Cecelia Peters’ stoneware tiles spice up your history lesson. Special museum First Friday hours are 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and refreshments are provided. Admission is free to both the art reception and museum, but your donations help keep the museum open for all. https://www.facebook.com/albanyregionalmuseum/

2018 Albany Historic Interior Home Tour

Spend a wonderful day on Saturday, July 28th, exploring some of Albany’s most beautiful historic homes and buildings. The tour is “self-guided,” meaning you have a choice about how to tour the sites—you can ride a horse-drawn wagon or antique trolley and go in map order, or you can opt to drive your own car and visit homes and buildings in any order you like.

Greeters will be on hand at each site to show guests around and refreshments will be served. Once you’ve secured your ticket at our office, you might want to have lunch at one of our great restaurants, ride the carousel and join the tour afterwards.

Tickets are on sale the day of the tour (at AVA’s office) starting at 10:00 a.m. for $15 each; children under 12 are free. We are located on the corner of Lyon and 3rd Ave SE (110 3rd Ave, SE). You can also prepay for your ticket on our secure-certificate ticketing plug-in below. (Some fields are required so that we may confirm your purchase.) Telephone our office at 541-928-0911 if you have any questions.

Celebrate National Historic Preservation Month

Why history and heritage?

Albany was founded in 1848 and was an agricultural mecca for many an Oregon Trail pioneer. These early roots are still cherished in Albany—and today, history and heritage are alive and flourishing.

More than 700 historic buildings dating from the 1840s to the 1920s are nestled in four historic districts. Albany Visitors Association publishes a free guide to help you plan your own walking or driving tours through these charming neighborhoods, so during National Preservation Month, stop by and pick one up from our office.

What is National Historic Preservation Month?

National Historic Preservation Month is an opportunity to celebrate Albany history with events (most of them free) throughout May. The National Trust for Historic Preservation encourages cities across the nation to raise awareness about the month-long event, and states that “Preservation Month was designed to raise awareness about the power historic preservation has to protect and enhance our homes, neighborhoods and communities – the places that really matter to us. It provides an opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country’s cities and towns, and enables all of us to become involved in the growing preservation movement.”

Month long events and recognition opportunities
